How to sell AI-generated art
Yes — you can sell AI-generated art in most markets, and plenty of artists already do. What decides whether it sells is the same as with any other work: a recognisable hand, honest listings, and files a printer can actually use.
Can you legally sell it?
In the United States, the Copyright Office has said that purely machine-generated output isn't copyrightable on its own, while a work containing meaningful human authorship can be registered for those human contributions. Practically, that means you can sell the work and keep the revenue, but your copyright claim is strongest when you can show your own creative input: your source paintings, your curation, your edits.
Rules differ by country, and marketplace policy is a separate layer from copyright law — read the terms of whichever platform you list on. This is general information, not legal advice; check with a lawyer for anything high-stakes.
Two things to keep clean: don't imitate a living artist's style and sell it as theirs, and don't sell work built on references you have no right to use. Long-expired public-domain sources (the twelve master styles in Atelier come from open-access museum collections) and your own portfolio are the safe ground.
Where to sell
Etsy
Allows AI-assisted work, but it must be disclosed and listed accurately. Best for digital downloads and made-to-order prints.
Redbubble / Society6 / Printful
Print-on-demand marketplaces. Their file requirements are the real gate: expect 300 DPI at the printed size.
Your own shop (Shopify, Gumroad, Squarespace)
No marketplace policy risk and no commission split, but you supply the traffic.
Galleries, fairs and local retail
Physical canvas and framed prints. Provenance and a consistent personal style matter more than volume here.
The file problem nobody mentions
Most generators output around 1024px. At 300 DPI that's a 3.4-inch print. A 24 × 36in canvas needs 7,200 × 10,800px, so anything you intend to print large has to be upscaled with real detail reconstruction rather than stretched. Atelier Editions exports to 10,800px on the long edge, which covers every common poster and canvas size.

Buyers and marketplace algorithms are both saturated with default AI gloss. Work that reads as yours — your palette, your mark-making, a coherent series — is what turns a browse into a sale and lets you build a body of work instead of a pile of one-offs. Training a style set from your own portfolio is the cheapest differentiator available.
A short checklist before you list
- — Confirm you own or have rights to every reference image used.
- — Disclose AI assistance where the platform requires it.
- — Export at 300 DPI for the exact print size you're offering.
- — Keep a consistent style across a series so the shop reads as one artist.
- — Price for the physical product plus your time, not per generation.
